October 2016 – I won a $10k Humanitarian Materials Initiative Research Grant from the Materials Research Institute with my collaborator Materials Science professor R. Allen Kimel. Our proposal entitled, “Material Matters: A model for the design and construction of low-cost, high performance energy-efficient shelters in Burkina Faso, West Africa,” will investigate the production of energy efficient, high quality building components, and assembly systems that provide sustainable options for housing in Burkina Faso. The design of new material micro-structures will be explored through the principles of materials science, architecture, and design computation. Critical views of the role of indigenous knowledge in this interdisciplinary project will be developed.
