“Homing the Machine in Architecture” Chapter: Situated Computations: An Interview

Posted by

2024 – Dr. Noel’s interview with Galo Canizares about the framework and concept of “situated computation” she developed was published in his edited book, “Homing the Machine in Architecture.” The book chapter is titled, “Situated Computations: An Interview with Vernelle A. A. Noel.

Homing the Machine in Architecture is a series of conversations on the ways designers, practitioners, historians, and theorists orient themselves within the world of architectural digital fabrication.

Chapter Abstract:

This interview is centered around Vernelle A. A. Noel’s practice and research. Noel has pioneered a speculative practice called “situated computation,” a way of working with computational design and advanced fabrication tools that places people and regional contexts at the center. Here, Noel lays out the guiding principles for this practice as a kind of toolkit for reorientation. These principles introduce new perspectives on digital fabrication research that combine knowledge from ethnography and anthropology. Noel reminds us that people are at the center of this work and emphasizes the importance of grounding projects in reality rather than working in the abstract.
