September 2017 – I gave a presentation entitled, “Craft, Computation, and Technology: The Practice of Wire-Bending in Trinidad & Tobago” at the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) 2017 in Boston, MA. In this work, I explored how we might employ ethnography, computation, and technology in describing craft, transforming local knowledge, and producing new knowledge for applications in craft, architecture, design, and computation. Using the craft practice of wire-bending as a case study, the goal was to present: (1) how wire-benders explore science and the natural world through their work; (2) computational descriptions of wire-bending; and (3) how we might transform and reinterpret local knowledge with digital technology.
